The Project Consultant, Kinghaven Medical Second Opinion, Segun Olagundoye, has said that patients are within their rights to seek a second medical opinion on their health challenges.
Olagundoye said a second evaluation from another medical personnel would help resolve doubts and also address any chances of misdiagnosis.
He said this at a press briefing oganised by Kinghaven Medical System Inc, a comprehensive medical clinic based in Houston, Texas, USA.
To improve Nigerians access to specialists without having to wait for long at local hospitals, Olagundoye said the organisation had inaugurated an initiative whereby Nigerian patients could be accessed by doctors abroad through telemedicine.
He noted that patients who might need to travel for advanced surgery that could not be done in Nigeria would be able to access treatment in American-based hospitals within the shortest time.
“A second assessment would be carried out on the patient; and a physician will be assigned to follow up with the Nigerian physician handling the case, as this is an integral part of the accurate diagnosis and treatment. If the patient has to travel, he or she would be referred to the appropriate specialist in the network.
“The advantage is that the patient can be seen within a day or two. This is important because I see a lot of Nigerian patients who come to the US and they don’t know where to go. Some have to wait for months before they can see a specialist. A lot of resources are being wasted while this is going on.”
The Chief Medical Officer of the organisation, Dr. George Miller, noted that the patient would be managed in collaboration with his or her Nigerian physician to ensure proper follow-up when they return to the country.
